The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) is starting to provide home made food i.e 'Desi Food' in train to passengers. This service will be operated by local food makers and not a multi food chain company.
IRCTC has signed a deal with women self help group. Under this deal various women help groups will be able to post their menus on IRCTC's website along with the rate. For each selected station on the route, where this service is available, menu will be different based on the food items that can be served by the women help groups.
Basically when you login to IRCTC for e-Ticket booking, you will also see option for food booking under e-Catering services. This could also be available on IRCTC tourism portal.
Earlier also IRCTC ventured with food chains like KFC, Dominoz, Mio amore, TFS, cafe lite, haley curry to provide tasty foods to its customers. Not to forget the IRCTC eCatering Service that is perhaps the easiest way to get meal at your train seat. But with Indians loving their home cooked tasty, healthy and nutritious food, new food in train service is being started.
Actually the big food chains had limited number of items to serve. Also, since India is a very diverse country with different cultures and taste, these limited items weren't enough to wipe appetite of different hungry men traveling in a train in India. Now with this service, passengers will get a local taste of a region which will keep varying as a train runs between stations across the country.
Initially the 'Food in Train' service will be experimented at important routes and stations like Allahabad, Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Agra, Kanpur, Lucknow, Varanasi, and 45 other railway stations. These stations are: Allahabad, Howrah, Sealdah, Guwahati, New Jalpaiguri, Patna, bhubaneswar, visakhapatnam, mughal sarai, kanpur central, lucknow junction, varanasi, jaipur junction, bilaspur, kharagpur, gorakhpur, anand vihar terminal, hazrat nizamuddin, new delhi, delhi, amritsar, chandigarh, ludhiana, secunderabad, tirupati, vijayawada, checnnai central, chennai egmore, ernakulam junction, kozhikode, madurai junction. trichur, thiruvananthapuram central, bengaluru city, yesvantpur, nagpur, pune, agra cantt., gwalior, jhansi bhopal, ahmedabad, mumbai central, surat, and vadodara.
