Get Free Alert on Train Cancellation by Indian Railways

There is a good news. Now Indian Railways will send free alerts on mobile numbers of passengers in case their train gets cancelled.

The "cancelled train alert" service is being started as a pilot project by railway and initially it will be available to only those passengers who would commence their journey from the source station of the train. Later on the service would also  be made available to all the passengers who may have booked their tickets from any intermediate station on the train route, and not just from the source station of the train.

As per news agency, railway official has said that they have planned to provide SMS alerts to railway passengers on their mobile phones in case railway has to cancel train running due to some unforeseen development. As of now, in order to know if train is cancelled, one has to regularly keep watch on National Train Enquiry or NTES which also provide free service to get train running status and facility to spot the train location for users.

Now you would be wondering how railway would know the mobile number of passengers on which to send alerts to passengers, then know that railway has devised a system using which they can get mobile numbers of their customers. The software system for sending alerts to users is developed by CRIS (Centre for Railway Information Systems).

In case of online ticket booking through IRCTC (https://irctc.co.in), railway will send alerts on the same mobile number which user provided at the time of registration on IRCTC. If you haven't registered till now, get latest information on how to signup on irctc registration page here.

On the other hand, in case passenger booked his ticket through PRS (Passenger Reservation System) counter railway will use the phone number that passenger provided or filled into railway reservation form/slip before submitting it to railway staff at the counter for booking train tickets.

The information about cancellation of train will be provided well in advance so that railway users can make alternate arrangements for their journey/travel comfortably and their time is also not wasted.

We recommend all our users to compulsory fill in their mobile phone numbers into reservation slip while booking tickets through reservation counters located on railway stations to get advantage of cancelled train alert service.

Why even hackers don't hack IRCTC ?

The irctc.co.in site - the official railway ticket booking site of India belonging to Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has never been hacked, and there is very less chance of anyone attempting to do so. This might sound strange to you.

In a country like India where due to abundance of talented IT and programming talent, the claim that no one will even attempt to hack IRCTC doesn't seem right.

Especially when there are great benefits of doing so.

Of course new programmers do get excited and try and hack a website. After all what it requires is some good and intelligent programming. Although there are no known hacks, some well known hackers might be considering making an autobot that will just require to fill in captcha at the time of ticket booking. Basically on one single click the bot will automatically try to book Tatkal ticket at 10 am and will prompt you only for captcha. Captcha can also be bypassed though. No one has yet created such a hack. However …
