The IRCTC train enquiry is useful for getting information about a train whose ticket is booked online using Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation's online railway reservation system.

The important information available through IRCTC's train enquiry, as seen on irctc.com site, is very similar to what we have already mentioned on railway enquiry page (where telephone number and other related info is also given).

We list below some of the important enquiries of IRCTC related to train, all of which can be performed by calling on 139. Rail users can also just SMS on 139(One number for One India) and get all the information about basic and premium railway services through a single window by interacting with  professionally trained agents in hindi, english and regional languages.

  1. PNR status enquiry: It is done to confirm the reservation status of passenger.
  2. Train timings enquiry: It tells the correct/ right time or scheduled time of train on stations on its route. (Also see irctc login train timings)
  3. Passenger Fare enquiry: It provides information about basic fare for traveling in various classes of train coach.
  4. Seat availability enquiry: It is useful for finding how many seats are remaining unreserved in train.
  5. Train between stations enquiry: It provides information about trains that runs between any or two important railway stations.
  6. Train arrival departure, rescheduled, delayed and diverted trains: these train enquiries are actually not available through IRCTC, but can be checked at erail or at national train enquiry system (NTES).
  7. Station code enquiry: It is used for finding out the code that Indian railway has assigned to a particular railway stations. This code is used in performing other train related enquiries.
  8. Train name and code enquiry: using it a user can know the train number of train by entering its name or vice versa.
All the above information is also provided by Indian Railways through their passenger reservation website - 'www.indianrail.gov.in'. Users having smartphones, can also download mobile apps for irctc to perform above enquiries.

IRCTC provides these information as a part of ticket booking process to their registered users when they use its new site - irctc next generation reservation. And it makes sense too. Who would be bothered to check the PNR status when he hasn't booked a ticket. Similarly the only people who will be interested in knowing availability of seats will be the ones who are interested in booking train tickets currently.
